In 1580-1581, the French writer and philosopher Michel de Montaigne, in the company of four young men, undertook a horseback journey through Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy. The impressions of this trip are reflected in his diary, which was first published only in 1774.
These personal travel notes testify to the traveler's genuine interest in everything that he encountered along the way. The history of cities and villages, architectural and engineering structures, local traditions and the state of medicine, the menu and amenities of guest houses, the cost of horses and overnight stays - all are given the attention of the author of the diaries. A significant place is occupied by descriptions of hydropathic establishments: the equipment of the baths, the taste of the water, the effect it has on the body, etc.
Montaigne's miraculously preserved travel diary allows us to see the everyday side of the era that descendants will call the Late Renaissance.
