One of the best historical novels by Sergei Petrovich Borodin is dedicated to the struggle of Rus' for liberation from the Golden Horde yoke. It was first published in January 1941. The writer recalled: “The world of the 14th century appeared before my eyes, and it was already possible to write about it as about reality. But at the same time, I did not forget that the brown horde was burning and trampling the cities of Europe and that our reader should be reminded of the price at which we defended our homeland from similar hordes many centuries ago.” While working on the novel, Borodin studied a huge number of ancient documents, visited museums and traveled to places of historical events, which allowed him to create a broad and reliable picture of Russian life in the 14th century. Rus', famous for its endless expanses and natural resources, suffers from many years of extortion and raids by the Tatars, and the princes are at odds with each other. It was during this difficult and disturbing time that the young Moscow prince Dmitry Ivanovich became the head of Rus'. At his call, military detachments, city and peasant militias were assembled - the entire people rose up to fight the enemy. The reader will get acquainted with the closest associate of the Grand Duke Mikhail Brenk and the abbot of the Russian land Sergius of Radonezh, the voivode Bobrok and the architect Kirill, the legendary warrior monks Peresvet and Oslyabya and many other valiant men; he will witness the defeat of the Horde on the Vozha River and the historic battle of the united Russian army on the Kulikovo Field.
