The story of Joan of Arc, the heroine of the Hundred Years' War, is one of the key “places of memory” for French culture. Since the 15th century, her images have been repeatedly reproduced by artists, graphic artists, sculptors, engravers and caricaturists. In her book, Olga Togoeva traces how approaches to the iconography of the Virgin of Orleans changed in different historical periods and how such changes were associated with the political culture of France. Using these completely fictitious, often strange, and sometimes simply fantastic images, the author proposes to study the likes and dislikes of the French of the Middle Ages, New and Modern times, their views on social processes, current political events, religious and social problems. French kings of the late Middle Ages, Cardinal Richelieu and Napoleon Bonaparte, party leaders and statesmen of modern France - all of them for six centuries used the image of Joan of Arc, playing up certain existing myths about her or creating their own legends. Olga Togoeva - Doctor of Historical Sciences, chief researcher at the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
