This publication, dedicated to the illustrations of Soviet-era children's periodicals, is based on materials from the collection of collectors Nina and Vadim Ginzburg. It includes over a thousand illustrations for magazines and almanacs such as "Koster," "Murzilka," "Pioneer," "Krugly God," "Kolobok," and many others. The country's best artists were commissioned to work on these illustrations at various periods, from the 1930s to the late 1990s. It was they, in collaboration with writers, poets, and editorial staff, who created a unique phenomenon—Soviet children's magazines, some of which still exist today. The diversity of themes and subjects of the magazine columns—from cheerful stories and entertaining puzzles to scientific essays and experiments—inspired a diverse artistic exploration by illustrators, which is reflected in this historical retrospective of magazine illustration. The legacy of Soviet children's magazine graphics, a unique phenomenon in the history of world art, is not only a vast array of outstanding artistic material, not only the trajectories of exploration and discovery by hundreds of renowned and little-known artists, but also a panorama of the publishing process across the country. After all, Moscow, Leningrad, and dozens of regional publishing houses were focal points for creative energies and transmitters of graphic culture to the masses.
