Dazai Osamu (1909-1948) is one of the greatest figures in Japanese literature of the twentieth century, the century of global upheavals, the breakdown of the usual way of life, rapid changes in the conditions of human life and its quality. Particularly noticeable changes occurred in Japan, which in a relatively short time turned from a feudal country into one of the most highly developed countries in the world. Naturally, the breakdown of centuries-old foundations resulted in considerable human casualties. The human psyche simply could not, did not have time to adapt to rapidly changing life circumstances. That is why there are so many tragic figures in Japanese literature of the twentieth century. And, perhaps, one of the most tragic is Dazai Osamu. It is difficult to attribute him to a specific literary movement. Many call him a classic of the "novel about oneself" (watakushi-shosetsu), others talk about his closeness to romanticism, but despite the fact that both are undoubtedly present in his work, Dazai Osamu's prose is difficult to fit into the narrow framework of one genre. The writer lived a short life (he died when he was forty), but left behind a rich literary legacy. He wrote about one hundred and forty short stories, several novellas and many essays on a variety of topics. This volume includes his most famous works.
