Old Chinese prose abounds with tales of the extraordinary. Collections of Chinese scholars regularly feature astonishing stories, recounted from eyewitnesses or participants. They tell of heaven punishing the killing of wondrous creatures and the slaying of other living beings. They gossip about auspicious omens and their causes. They speak of the souls of the dead returning from the afterlife to punish their offenders. They describe astonishing cases of the resurrection of the deceased, who had visited the afterlife and were brought back to life because their lifespan had not yet expired—detailed accounts of posthumous retribution are meant to instill in the living a fear of unseemly or sinful deeds. Here and there they talk of werewolves: foxes transformed into beautiful maidens deceive people, an old tree, disguised as a learned scribe, engages in intelligent conversations with people, or an ancient lamp causes a commotion in a house. Any ancient object can turn into a person, let alone animals? Demons are everywhere: they play pranks, cause harm, and even destroy people. The world is full of wonders!

This collection includes selected translations from two ancient Chinese collections: "High Judgments at the Palace Gate" by the Song official and writer Liu Fu and "The Records of Yijian" by the great Song scribe and writer Hong Mai, which contain numerous stories of the extraordinary.
