The works of the talented English writer Jane Austen (1775-1817) have become classics of British literature. This edition introduces readers to her famous novel "Sense and Sensibility", which was first published in 1811. The text is translated by Irina Gavrilovna Gurova. The plot of the novel is based on the love experiences of two sisters. The edition is decorated with black-and-white and color drawings by two brothers, British artists Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938) and Henry Matthew Brock (1875-1960).
Jane Austen's works have become classics of British literature. Her novels have been repeatedly reprinted. What made the famous English writer, who was born in the south of England in a large family in the distant 1775 and only a few times visited the capital? Father George was a priest in the tiny village of Steventon, which at the time numbered about 250 people. His attempts to give his children a systematic education failed: in one of the private schools Jane and her sister Cassandra almost died of typhus. Then George took matters into his own hands. He accustomed his children to reading, introducing them to the best examples of world classics and teaching them to discuss what they read. The house, in which Jane spent most of her life, was full of books. It was on this soil that Jane's literary gift blossomed. Her early writings were a parody of the love affairs of the time. Jane keenly felt their falsity and detachment from real life. The writer herself subtly and perceptively understood the movements of the human soul. This was the main secret of her success. Jane perfectly described and love experiences of her characters, and the conventions of life in which they act. Subtle English humor gave her texts a special charm. All these features are inherent in her novel "Sense and Sensibility", which was first printed in 1811. The plot of the novel is built around the love stories of two sisters: judicious and restrained Elinor and romantic impetuous Marianne. Hand in hand, they go through a variety of life challenges, relying on each other and their family. Unlike her heroines, the personal life of the writer herself did not work out. Literary fame came to her posthumously. To present the characters of the novel and the environment in which the events take place, this edition is helped by reliable in detail illustrations by two English artists: Charles and Henry Brock. They were siblings. Charles Edmund Brock was born in 1870. He began illustrating books, creatively developing the manner of Hugh Thomson, who is one of the best British masters of book illustration of the second half of the XIX century. Charles Brock achieved great success in this field: in addition to Austen's novels, he performed drawings for the works of Swift, Thackeray and Elliot. Henry Matthew Brock was five years younger than Charles. He received an art education at Cambridge School of Art, then also began to illustrate and became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters and Watercolorists.
