The novel is part of the supplementary reading program in literature for the 10th grade. Nikolai Gavrilovich Chernyshevsky (1828–1889) was a Russian literary critic, publicist, writer, revolutionary democrat, and philosopher. In his novel, What Is to Be Done?, Chernyshevsky challenges outdated social norms and proposes a daring plan to save Russia. The author describes "new people"—revolutionary democrats striving to build a just society based on reason, labor, and love. Chernyshevsky's socialist ideals are embodied in the story of Vera Pavlovna and her circle. Their lives are an experiment in creating an ideal world where work brings joy and relationships are based on equality.
