N. G. Chernyshevsky's novel "What is to be done?" - is one of the most controversial works of Russian literature. The novel saw the light of day in 1863 and immediately caused a storm of controversy: from sharply negative reviews of conservative writers to the delight of the revolutionary-minded youth. According to the memories of contemporaries, there was not a student or even a gymnasium student who had not read "What is to be done?". In the Soviet era, Chernyshevsky took an honorable place on the literary Olympus, and his main work was included in the compulsory school curriculum. Today, turning to the novel "What Is to Be Done?" makes us rethink its significance in the history of Russian literature and public life. The appendix includes two of Chernyshevsky's most important works on aesthetics, where he criticizes the theory of "art for art's sake"; it also includes responses to the novel "What is to be Done?" N. S. Leskov and D. I. Pisarev. The novel is published with illustrations by the artist Vladimir Petrovich Panov (1931-2007).
