After returning from South America, Tintin takes on a new puzzle. This time his path lies in Britain, where an unmarked airplane has just crashed. The day before, Tintin had already seen this plane, and the meeting with the pilots almost cost him his life. In England, Tintin barely gets away from the sinister Dr. Muller, who turns out to be the leader of a gang of counterfeiters. Tintin has to find a clandestine printing plant where the criminals print counterfeit banknotes. All traces lead to Scotland, to the Black Isle, which is notorious. There, in the ruins of Ben Mor Castle lives a monster, allegedly devouring all who dare to disturb his peace. Tintin takes a boat and sails there... Black Island is the only book of The Adventures of Tintin to exist in three different album versions (plus another magazine version, the very first, which was published in "with sequel" format from 1937-1938). The first is a black-and-white version from 1938; the second is a color version from 1943; and the third is a completely redrawn color version from 1965. It was not Hergé who redrew it, but his assistants, primarily Bob de Moor and Roger Leloup. Hergé only supervised the process, and only in passing, as he was busy with the current album and didn't really want to return to the 30-year-old story. The redrawing was demanded by the British publisher of the series, who considered the 1943 version outdated and full of small details that did not correspond to reality (the action takes place in Britain!). The British presented Hergé with a list of over 130 corrections, after which Hergé decided that it would be easier to redraw the whole thing. It is believed that the redrawing, while improving accuracy many times over, destroyed the charm of the first color version. This is despite the fact that Bob de Moor and Leloup are brilliant artists. But Hergé was more than just a "brilliant artist". However, it was the third version that was chosen by the publisher as the base version, and it was the one that became part of the classic series. Both previous ones, however, are also quite available as facsimiles (deluxe editions on expensive quality paper).
