Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelyov (1873–1950) was a Russian writer and publicist, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize. He was nicknamed the "Orthodox writer" for his numerous texts on Russian spirituality. While in exile, "not for a moment, in his spiritual fervor, did he cease to think about Russia and be tormented by its misfortunes."

The novella "The Man from the Restaurant" brought the author "true fame" and marked the culmination of the first stage of his creative work. The story is told from the perspective of waiter Yakov Skorokhodov, who has held this position for over twenty years. He barely makes ends meet, but believes it's right to earn money legally. However, one misfortune after another befalls his family: the arrest of his son Kolya for his involvement in the revolutionary underground, his father's unemployment, and the unfortunate situation of his daughter Natasha.

Written under the influence of the Revolution, which turned the previously measured lives of peaceful citizens upside down, the work is full of difficult events, but it also actualizes the importance of “awakening consciousness,” reminding that it is unacceptable to blindly follow the expression of someone else’s will.
