Anatol Lieven's book is devoted to the so-called First Chechen War of 1994-1996, an attempt by the Russian Federation to suppress a separatist rebellion in the North Caucasus. It was written by an eyewitness to the events (first published in 1998): the author was in Chechnya at the time described, and in his book he gives mainly his own impressions of what happened. Many of Lieven's predictions and assessments made immediately after the first war in Chechnya did not come true or need to be clarified, but his book is extremely valuable material not only on the Chechen events but also on Russia in the 1990s as a whole. A. Lieven writes about what the Russian Federation was like after the collapse of the Soviet Union, what impact the reforms then underway had on the psychology of the population, how the Russian government was organized, and how the emergence of D. Dudayev's separatist regime in Chechnya became possible.
