Why, of all the diseases prevalent in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, did consumption become aesthetically attractive and even fashionable? How did the symptoms of tuberculosis become closer to the generally accepted standards of beauty, and how did the disease itself acquire romantic connotations in the language of culture? The author tells the controversial history of tuberculosis on the example of a number of families affected by it in Europe in the late 18th and first half of the 19th century. Her analysis focuses on the development of the disease mainly in England, the different assessments of tuberculosis made by Romantic and Sentimentalist physicians, as well as cultural interpretations of the disease and their dependence on shifting social attitudes. In the work of Carolyn A. Dey presents tuberculosis as a phenomenon not only of medicine but also of fashion. Data from the natural sciences and findings from the humanities prove equally important to the main objective of the study, which is to identify the logic by which culture and society have conceptualized this deadly disease. Carolyn A. Day is a professor at Furman University and a specialist in the philosophy of science and history.
