The second phase of the Wars of Religion in France was associated with the reign of Henry III (1574–1589), the last monarch of the Valois dynasty. The conflict gradually transformed from a religious one into a civil strife and became increasingly politicized. Henry III made every effort to bring the political situation under his control, and despite isolated local conflicts, he managed to maintain peace between the two parts of France until 1584: the Huguenots, dominated by Henry of Navarre, and the Catholics. However, the death of François d'Alençon, the king's brother, exacerbated the question of succession, as Henry III had no children. The final stage of the conflict was the "War of the Three Henrys"—Valois, Bourbon, and Guise—for the crown of France. The war was characterized by the royal power's ultimate loss of authority, foreign intervention, and separatism in certain regions. A war that brought death to two of them and a crown to the survivor.
