"Buddenbrooks: The Story of a Family's Fall" is the debut novel by the distinguished German writer Thomas Mann (1875–1955), which won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929. "There is something extraordinary in the willfulness of the work," Mann wrote about his work on his first book. Conceived as a short "merchant" novel of two hundred and fifty pages, it evolved into a chronicle of several generations of a business dynasty from the ancient city of Lübeck. The founder of the dynasty, grain merchant Johann Buddenbrook, managed to become wealthy and earn the respect of the townspeople. However, the family business—Johann's joy and pride—brings his children and grandchildren not serene tranquility, but serious trials.
