Dmitry Yegorovich Min (1818–1885) was not a professional writer. He devoted his entire life to medical science, becoming a prominent expert in forensic medicine. At the same time, 19th-century critics considered him one of the finest translators of his time. Min translated from Italian, German, and English, and worked on works by Byron and Schiller. However, it was his work on The Divine Comedy, the translation of which he polished until the end of his days, that brought him well-deserved literary fame. His profound knowledge of this great work helped Min convey the spirit of the original and its many subtleties. It is no coincidence that he became known as the Russian interpreter of Dante.
Gustave Doré (1832–1883) did not receive a classical art education. However, his natural talent for drawing and the many years he spent in Paris studying paintings and engravings in the Louvre and the Bibliothèque Nationale helped him hone his craft independently. Gustave Doré was only fifteen when his first album of lithographs, "The Labours of Hercules," was published. In his graphic works, Doré masterfully used the interplay of light and shadow. His hand is instantly recognizable—whether in illustrations of Dante, Rabelais, the tales of Charles Perrault, or the adventures of Baron Munchausen. It's no coincidence that critics have rightly ranked Doré among the greatest illustrators of the 19th century.
