The study is devoted to the military events that took place in the summer - fall of 1658 in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania within the framework of the Russian-Polish war of 1654-1667. The resumption of hostilities after the Vilna Armistice of 1656 was caused by the first unsuccessful attempt of the armed forces of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to regain Vilna (Vilnius), the capital of Lithuania, which had been lost three years earlier. As a result of the victory of the Russian army of Prince Y.A. Dolgorukov in the Battle of Wierki on October 11 (21), 1658, the Moscow state managed to prevent the enemy's attack and retain control over the largest city of the GDL.
Despite the importance of this victory, this battle is one of the least studied in Russian military history. A separate chapter of the book is devoted to the fight against the rebellion of Ukrainian Cossacks I. Nechai in Belorussia, which significantly complicated the course of the military campaign of 1658. Until now, the military events in question have not been the subject of a special study in Russian historiography. The main part of the archival materials involved in the work has never been published before. Most of the documents on the composition, number and losses of the Russian army in the battles and campaigns of the Lithuanian campaign of 1658 are introduced into the scientific turnover for the first time.
