The struggle between the northern states for power and influence in the Baltic reached its climax in the 17th century. In the early years of that century, Denmark-Norway, possessing a large navy and dominating the Sound, was the strongest power in the west, while Poland dominated the east. However, over time, Sweden rapidly expanded its control not only over the Baltic but also over much of Northern Europe. Russia played an active role in the struggle for the Baltic, and this struggle was crowned with success: in 1721, Peter the Great opened a "window to Europe." The author focuses on the economic importance of the Baltic for Europe and, in connection with this, the policies of the European powers. However, the central theme of J. Lisk's study is the story of Sweden's rise and dramatic decline.

The narrative is accompanied by maps explaining the course of events.
