"Yes, it must be admitted, he was no stranger to the old, ridiculous nowadays prejudices: love for the motherland, consciousness of living duty to her and feelings of personal honor. And even more old-fashioned was the fact that he was always ready to pay for these three points of his own life" - so wrote Kuprin about Nikolai Gumilev. When Russia entered World War I, the poet could not stay away and went to the front as a volunteer. The test of war Gumilyov withstood with honor. And although he was not destined to know the joy of victory, another battle with himself, he won. But most importantly, among the blood, dirt, cruelty and hatred Nikolai Stepanovich remained a knight, faithful to the old prejudices. He was one of the few who could poetize the war, and almost the only literary man of the Silver Age, who left such a detailed and honest account of his service in the warring army. His "Notes of a Cavalryman" were printed in newspapers in 1915-1916 and aroused great interest among the reading public. In this book, with the help of various texts and documents, the poet's combat path from the first days of the war to the Brest Peace is fully recreated.
