This unique collection presents siege diaries from the archives of the Department of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. The diaries were kept by the authors directly during the siege of Leningrad and lack the censorship inherent in officially published memoirs of the siege in the Soviet period. They were attached to the criminal cases of their authors - an accountant at an institute, a schoolteacher, and two Red Army soldiers who fought on the Leningrad front before being conscripted - ordinary workers. These diaries give an invaluable insight into the daily life of the besieged city, they contain many details of everyday life, descriptions of feelings and fears. For the first time the reader will be able to see the siege of Leningrad through the eyes of people of different professions, educational level and status, overcoming the traditional bias towards depicting the greatest tragedy of the Second World War exclusively by intellectuals.
In addition, the collection includes survey materials, letters and diaries of Wehrmacht soldiers who participated in the siege of Leningrad, which make it possible to present the siege from the other side of the front, which, together with documents on Hitler's propaganda activities, significantly expands the view of the largest humanitarian catastrophe in world history.
