The book is an illustrated edition of bylinas — folk epic songs about Russian heroes — and includes both their prose versions, made by the famous folklorist I. Karnaukhova and first published in the post-war year of 1949 with illustrations by N. Kochergin, which became popular and were subsequently reprinted many times, and original song lyrics, published according to the fundamental continuing publication “Collection of Russian Folklore”, the “Bylina” series, prepared based on archival materials by the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkin House) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The bylina epic has long inspired artists to create epic paintings and individual images of mighty Russian heroes, because it contains a huge layer of ancient beliefs, mythological images, as well as historical figures and events, a description of ancient Russian everyday life and social structure. It is in the Russian epic with its strong and sincere national feeling that the ideas of good and evil, truth and strength, honor and duty have been formed over the centuries, building moral guidelines in listeners and readers. A whole world of epic heroes, their lives, exploits and adventures will open up before the readers: the ancient giant hero Svyatogor, the hero-sorcerer Volga, the hero-plowman Mikula Selyaninovich, the people's favorites Dobrynya Nikitich, Alyosha Popovich and Ilya Muromets, as well as Danilo Ignatyevich and his son, the young hero Danilo, the folk singer and guslar, the Novgorod merchant Sadko, Mikhailo Kozarinov, Stavr Godinovich and his wife, the cunning Vasilisa Mikulishna, each with their own story and character. And more than a hundred unique illustrations by such artists as V. Vasnetsov, M. Vrubel, A. Ryabushkin, N. Roerich, I. Bilibin and N. Vorobyov, who turned to epics in their works, will complement and enliven the epic plots and images. The book also includes articles on epics in Russian art and the poetics of epics, biographies of artists and a "Dictionary of obsolete and little-used words".

The book is addressed to the widest range of readers interested in the origins and foundations of Russian culture.
