The book "There Was a Whole World" by the St. Petersburg writer, literary historian, essayist A. Yu. Ariev is about one of the most famous poets of the Russian diaspora of the 20th century, who considered himself "the last St. Petersburg poet." Born in Russia and having spent his youth in St. Petersburg-Petrograd, he was acquainted with Alexander Blok from his youth and was a member of the "Poets' Workshop" headed by Nikolai Gumilev. After Gumilev's death, having published collections of his poems and critical works in Petrograd, Georgy Ivanov left Russia in 1922, spending the rest of his life in France. A. Yu. Ariev has been researching his life and work for more than a decade, he is the author of many publications of the poet, his correspondence, articles about his life and work, poems in the "New Library of the Poet", as well as one of the books about him. The present edition, one might say, is the final one. Taking a broad view of the fate of Georgy Ivanov (1894–1958) as a whole, A. Yu. Ariev’s research is characterized by close attention to his life — in close connection with the poet’s work itself. The narrative is based on first publications from various archives in the Russian Federation, France, and the United States. Many documents, including handwritten texts by Georgy Ivanov himself, are published here for the first time.
