"Conversation of St. Seraphim of Sarov with Motovilov N.A. on the purpose of Christian life" is justly considered the most precious pearl of the Orthodox teaching on salvation. Nikolai Alexandrovich Motovilov, a wealthy landowner, healed by St. Seraphim from an incurable disease of the legs, spent his entire life close to the great elder and called himself "Seraphim's servant". This extraordinary conversation took place in November 1831 in a forest not far from the Sarov monastery. The manuscript with its retelling was discovered seventy years later in papers given by Motovilov's widow to the famous spiritual writer Sergei Nilus. The thoughtfully outstanding teaching on the reception of the Holy Spirit as the meaning of a Christian's life became the property of the Church just before the glorification of St. Seraphim of Sarov in 1903. Before 1917, several editions of this talk were published, but on the eve of the Revolution S.A. Nilus, having finally examined the manuscript, published a fully verified text with a preface, afterword, and some notes. It is this text that is reproduced in the present publication.
