The diary of Princess Maria Illarionovna Vasilchikova (1917-1978), first published in the UK in 1984, immediately became a bestseller and was translated into many languages. The daughter of Russian aristocrats-emigrants, since 1940 an employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, she was a friend of high-ranking officers and diplomats, participants in the conspiracy on July 20, 1944, which ended in an unsuccessful attempt on Hitler, committed by Colonel Klaus von Stauffenberg.
After the failure of the conspiracy, Vasilchikova kept records using a special cursive cipher. This is one of the rare surviving documents that gives an accurate socio-psychological picture of the aristocratic opposition.
