Our days.
Senior investigator Volin takes on the investigation of the official of the Ministry of Health Mikhail Golochuev, who works in Moscow. Golochuev is suspected of corruption, in particular, in the fact that he was given billions of bribes for the distribution of the state order for the supply of medical equipment. During the investigation, it turns out that the official has no significant real estate in Russia or abroad, no bank accounts, no luxury items. In Moscow, he lives in a service apartment, and the whole situation here is official. For advice, Volin turns to his good friend, historian of special services, retired KGB General Sergei Vorontsov. He can try to find out something about Golochuev through his channels. At the request of General Volin also sends Vorontsov the next memoirs of Nestor Vasilyevich Zagorsky, which the senior investigator deciphered.
August 1911
From the Louvre disappears the painting by Leonardo da Vinci “Mona Lisa del Gioconda”, which is often called simply “Gioconda”. It is stolen by a man who calls himself the Decorator, but it is impossible to identify the kidnapper. Meanwhile, Zagorsky and Ganzalin travel across Europe. In the Italian city of Florence, they are caught by the news that the Gioconda has been stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris. The painting disappeared on Monday, when it was a day off at the museum. In theory, this should facilitate the investigation. However, the abductor seemed to escape with the masterpiece, leaving almost no traces, except for a protective box and frame from the painting. Ganzaling persuades the owner to investigate the theft. Zagorsky seems curious about the circumstances of the abduction, and he decides to take up the case. Moreover, the real state councillor was going to Paris anyway.
