As in "The Name of the Rose," the Middle Ages and modern times overlap and reflect each other. Like "The Name of the Rose," "Baudolino" is a historical novel with detective elements.

The plot draws on Conan Doyle's "The Six Napoleons," as well as myths about the Magi, the Shroud of Turin, and the search for the Grail. The heroes wander through fictional kingdoms, battle armies of fantastical creatures, and the story culminates in a tense double denouement reminiscent of a thriller.

Journalists immediately noted: Baudolino is a kind of self-portrait of Eco. A tireless storyteller, a bookworm, a celebrity, and a citizen of the world, he simultaneously remains a man with an intimate understanding of the humble, dense, semi-peasant life of the Italian provinces.

Eco and his hero are a part of their native town of Alexandria in Piedmont. It is this Alexandria, emerging before the reader's eyes, that is depicted in the novel as an almost sacred place - an earthly paradise and a haven for the Grail, despite all its simplicity and disorganization.
