Once upon a time there lived a dog Barbos and a cat Matilda on a farm. The dog dreamed of a cozy warm kennel where he could lie down and eat a bone. And the cat - about a small cat door to go about her important business whenever she wanted. The owner promised that he would fulfill their dreams if they helped him to get rid of the fox, who was stealing chickens at night.
Barbos was sure that in no time he would deal with the fox, and in his mind he was already settling in his new kennel. But, as it turned out, the fox was cunning. She spent the first night diligent Barbos and stole another chicken. Barbos, seeing that he could not cope, took first a pig, then a sheep as his helpers - but they also missed the chickens. When it became clear that Barbosa's team had failed, Matilda the cat took over. However, she did not think to engage in an open fight with the fox. Matilda was a businesswoman, so she went and made a deal with the attic mice, telling them: "Make the fox stop dragging the owner's chickens, and I will never touch you again.". The offer was a favorable one, and the mice came up with a clever way to keep the fox away from the henhouse. Matilda received praise from her master and the coveted cat door. But she did not forget about poor Barbos and persuaded the master to fulfill his wish too, because the dog, though he could not cope with the fox, was otherwise a very loyal and diligent assistant. This story of ingenuity, pride and generosity was invented by the French writer Chantal de Marolles. She has already written more than a hundred works for children, in which she combines the traditions of folk tales with a modern sound. The book was illustrated by the famous German artist Axel Scheffler, known all over the world for his stories about the Gruffalo.
