In August 2020, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation recognized the movement known in the media as "AUU" as an extremist organization. In recent years, various information processes have been associated with this enigmatic acronym, which can be deciphered, for example, as "Arrestant Way of Life Unity" or "Arrestant Criminal Unity," and it is these processes that have been the subject of anthropologist Dmitry Gromov's research. In his book, the scientist sets out to show the mechanisms by which the phenomenon of "AUU" became such a prominent media event. How did the word, which appeared in the information space in 2014-2022, turn into one of the main brands of fear of crime? What factors influenced the construction of this brand? And is the real problem of criminalization of youth behind it? The author seeks to find answers to these questions by drawing on the concept of moral panic. Dmitry Gromov is an anthropologist, Doctor of Historical Sciences, leading researcher at the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
