The book by the outstanding Swiss psychologist and thinker Marie-Louise von Franz, "Archetypal Symbols in Fairy Tales", which she worked on for eight years, was published in the 1950s under the name of another person, Hedwig von Beuth.
The Jungian Psychology Foundation in Küsnacht achieved recognition of von Franz's authorship and published three volumes of research under the name of the real author. And only now is this work being published in Russian for the first time as part of a collection of works.
In this work, Marie-Louise von Franz turns to fairy tales of many peoples, often including Russian folk tales. She is the founder of a new direction in the study of folklore using the achievements of analytical psychology.
The work "Archetypal Symbols in Fairy Tales" offered to the attention of readers is published in the first three volumes of the collected works: "The Everyday and Magical Worlds", "The Hero's Journey" and "The Maiden's Test".
The third volume is devoted to fairy tales, where the main character is a girl, young woman or woman who will have to face dangers and pass tests on the path of her own individuation. The diversity of archetypal images is manifested here through the interpretation of such well-known fairy tales as "Bluebeard", "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", "Sleeping Beauty", "Cinderella", etc. All these fairy tales are considered through the prism of the female psyche, where the heroine's journey is a "great quest" with the goal of internal development of the personality and the acquisition of awareness.
The book is addressed to both specialists in the field of psychoanalysis, psychology, cultural studies, and a wide range of readers who are interested in folk art.
