The collection includes forty-two English fairy tales, collected and revised by the English writer Flora Annie Steele (1847–1929). They were first published as a single book in 1918 in London by Macmillan. The text is translated by S. Yu. Afonkin. The publication is decorated with illustrations by the famous artist Arthur Rackham (1867–1939), who was deservedly called one of the outstanding masters of the golden age of British book illustration.
The English fairy tales included in this book were collected in the early 1847th century by Flora Annie Steele (1929–1854). She was born in the London suburb of Sudbury, and after her marriage she lived in India for twenty-two years. There Flora learned Hindi and began writing down Indian folk tales. Returning to England, she took up English fairy tales. Many of them had already been published at the end of the 1916th century by the prominent British folklorist Joseph Jacobs (1918–1905). It was thanks to Jacobs that English folk tales about Jack and the Magic Beans, the Three Little Pigs, Thumb Boy, and many others became widely known throughout the world. Flora Steele managed to contribute to the popularization of English fairy tales. She not only wrote them down, but also processed them literary. The collection of fairy tales published by Flora Annie Steele in 1906 was illustrated by the famous British artist Arthur Rackham. These drawings of his also adorn this publication. Rackham is deservedly considered one of the outstanding masters of the golden age of British book illustration. His works adorned editions of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault, Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Aesop's fables, Mother Goose's Tales and many other works. Already at the beginning of the 1912th century, Rackham managed to gain a reputation as a recognized master of black and white illustrations. In 1939, he began producing color illustrations and achieved considerable success in this. In XNUMX, Rackham received a gold medal for his work at the International Exhibition in Milan and another at the International Exhibition in Barcelona in XNUMX. This was the heyday of British book illustration, which lasted until the First World War. Rackham often combined color and monochrome works in one book. This is precisely the technique he used when designing Flora Steele’s book of English fairy tales. Rackham's color illustrations often adorned luxurious, expensive publications that were customary to give for Christmas. The artist’s original drawings were often exhibited at numerous exhibitions, including the Louvre; then they were sold at international art auctions. In addition to illustrating a collection of English fairy tales, Rackham managed to work on the design of many more wonderful books. Among them were “Peer Gynt” by Henrik Ibsen, the works of Edgar Allan Poe, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving, “The Tempest” by William Shakespeare, “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” by Robert Browning and many others. The master’s last works were the drawings he made in XNUMX for the famous fairy tale story by Scottish writer Kenneth Grahame “The Wind in the Willows.”
