There's a coup in Hemed. Tintin and Captain Haddock fly there to help the rightful ruler, Emir Ben Kalish-Ezab, regain power. However, their arrival is already known: at the airport of Wad al-Dahra, our heroes are put on a plane and sent back. Soon after takeoff, the engine lights up on board, but the pilot still manages to land on the shore of the Red Sea. To top it all off, an explosion occurs in an abandoned plane! Realizing that all this is not for nothing, Tintin offers to secretly return to Wad al-Dahr, and in the morning the friends already knock on the door of the shop of Señor Oliveira da Figueira, who tells them where to find the emir. The heroes make their way to the mountains, meet Ben Kalish-Ezab and learn shocking facts about those behind the rebels. Tintin intends to thwart their criminal plans.
The magazine version of the 19th album, The Adventures of Tintin, launched on October 31, 1956, and finished on January 1, 1958; the same year an album edition was released. This volume completes the "sea" theme of the series, started by "Crab with Gold Claws" and continued first by "Mysterious Star" and later by a pirate dilogy ("The Secret of the Unicorn" and "The Treasure of Red Rakkam"). Moreover, in subsequent stories, we will not see Tintin’s companions aboard ocean ships; the only boat they will have to test in the final five volumes is the inflatable boat on Flight 714 to Sydney. Sharks of the Red Sea set a series record for the number of characters already familiar to readers on previous albums. In addition to the permanent members of the “close family” of Tintin (Captain Haddock, Professor Tournesol, Dupont and Dupond, Nestor) on the pages of the album we meet General Alcazar (his eternal rival Tapioka is only mentioned, his images are not in the book), the former chief of police of the International Settlement in Shanghai Dawson, Abdullah and his father Emir Ben Calish Ezab, Sheikh Bab El-Era (although we see him only in the photo in the newspaper), the Portuguese merchant Oliveira da Fipora, his images are not in the book), the former head of the infamous singer Kapopoporemonttagore, Kamperttagorodov, Kamperova Mullion, Kamperova, and Kamperova. On the contrary, only one of the new characters will appear in the series again: Estonian pilot Peter Tamm (he will be seen in the already mentioned Flight 714 to Sydney).
