The Akathist is dedicated to Saint Nektarios (1846–1920), one of the most venerated saints in Greece. Born in Selymbria, part of Ottoman Turkey, Nektarios left for Greece, where he took monastic vows (Chios) and studied at the University of Athens. As Metropolitan of Pentapolis, he served for two years in Egypt, but after being disgraced and slandered, he was forced to return to Greece. He served as a preacher in Euboea and, in Athens, directed a theological school for over ten years. Nektarios spent the last twelve years of his life on the island of Aegina, in the Trinity Monastery he founded. In 1961, the Patriarchate of Constantinople canonized Nektarios.
