Chukovsky is famous first of all as the author of poems familiar to us since childhood. Who has not heard, for example, his "Tarakanisch" or "Fly Tsokotukha"? Less well known to the general public as a brilliant historian of literature. Thoughtful reading of books was the main passion of his life. His childhood Nikolai Korneichukov spent in Odessa, his mother was a simple peasant woman. The young man, expelled from grammar school for "low origin", irresistibly drawn to literature. He could, walking through the streets of Odessa, to start loudly and with great feeling to read stanzas from "Eugene Onegin" or Fet. Under the pseudonym Korney Chukovsky, he began to write articles for the newspaper "Odessa News". Soon the editorial board sent Chukovsky as a correspondent to London, because he was brilliant in English, which he learned independently. There, in the reading room of the British Museum, the novice writer greedily swallowed volumes of Swift, Thackeray and dozens of other English-language writers. Returning to Russia, Chukovsky soon settled in the Finnish town of Kuokkala, where he began translations and literary criticism, quickly amassing a huge library. From under his pen came out brilliant essays on the works of Chekhov, Balmont, Blok, Kuprin. Chukovsky wrote a major monograph on the works of Nekrasov (in 1962 he was awarded the Lenin Prize for it). Korney Ivanovich began to work on children's poems, having already gained fame as a talented writer. In doing so, he developed his own inimitable style, "Korneevu stanza". Poems of other poets Chukovsky read brilliantly and was aware of all the poetic novelties of the country. Sometimes well known to all of us familiar children's poems overshadow other literary work of Chukovsky, but this speaks only of the versatility of this amazing man. The book is especially charmed by cheerful illustrations made by the talented artist Anatoly Mikhailovich Eliseev. He began his career as an actor, already at the age of fourteen he began to act in movies. However, his true calling was painting; Eliseev felt it keenly. Craving for painting led him to the Moscow Polygraphic Institute, which he graduated in 1952. Then Eliseev was twenty-two years old. The young man became closely involved in caricature and book illustrations, began to cooperate with the magazines "Krokodil", "Veselye Kartinki" and "Murzilka"; on their pages his cheerful mischievous drawings were instantly recognized. In 1966 Eliseev became an Honored Artist of the RSFSR, and in 2001 he was awarded the title "People's Artist of the Russian Federation".
