The saga of Horatio Hornblower, an officer of the British Royal Navy, who passed a glorious and difficult way from a simple midshipman to a lord and admiral, is a unique phenomenon in the world historical-adventure literature. Million circle of admirers, endless circulation, truly world recognition, which brought the writer to the classics of the genre, film and television versions with such famous actors as Gregory Peck, Christopher Lee, and other stars of world cinema. The author of the saga, Cecil Scott Forester, said of his hero, "He has delivered me countless friends all over the world. Customs officers read my last name and let my luggage through without inspection. He has set me up with admirals and princesses, and I am grateful to him, honestly, although I often think that it would be better if he had not." Not every writer is so lucky with a character. The Horatio Hornblower saga has left a notable literary mark. Bernard Cornwell's book series about the gunslinger Sharpe was influenced by Forester. Patrick O'Brien, drawing from the books of the famous saga, wrote a multi-volume epic about Captain Aubrey. Even Harry Harrison sparodied in a kindly way the image of the hero Forester in one of his stories ("Captain Gonario Harppleyer"). The book concludes the narrative of the naval exploits of Horatio Hornblower, a personality who, in the words of Winston Churchill, "evokes from the past the great and rugged image of the Royal Navy in the age of its glory".
