Based on materials from seventeen archives of five countries, the monograph reconstructs for the first time in detail the military-political biography of one of the most controversial figures of the era of the Civil War in Russia, the white general and red military specialist Yakov Alexandrovich Slashchev-Krymsky (1885–1929). Slashchev was a guards officer, a graduate of the Imperial Nikolaev Military Academy, a hero of the First World War, a talented military leader. During the Civil War, he commanded a brigade, division and corps, with which he acted in the North Caucasus, Crimea and Ukraine. He became a general at the age of 33. He became most famous as the leader of the defense of the Crimea from the Reds in early 1920. The successful defense of the peninsula allowed the Whites to stay in European Russia until November 1920, which prolonged the Civil War in the south of the country for several months. The subsequent conflict with General P.N. Wrangel and dismissal by court of honor from the Russian army led to the return of Slashchev from emigration to Soviet Russia. The book analyzes Slashchev's service experience and life strategies both during his service in the old army and during the Civil War, when he collaborated with both the Reds and the Whites, the most likely motives for his return to Russia are reconstructed, and his activities in Soviet Russia are studied. and the USSR.
