Alexander Evgenievich Presnyakov (1870, Odessa - 1929, Leningrad) - an outstanding specialist in the ancient Russian state and law, Russian annals, the history of land ownership in the Russian North, as well as in the history of Russia in the first half of the 1908th century. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences, graduate and teacher of St. Petersburg University. Disagreeing with the traditional scheme of the development of Rus', Presnyakov rejected the theory of patrimonial princely possession in Kievan Rus and considered family, paternal law to be the basis of princely property. The scientist considered Kievan Rus as a common basis for the historical development of the Russian and Ukrainian peoples. He studied the process of centralization of North-Eastern Rus' in the context of international relations, giving an exhaustive and reliable description of the political history of this period. Lectures on the history of Western Rus' and the Lithuanian-Russian state were delivered by A. E. Presnyakov at St. Petersburg University in 09/1909 and 10/XNUMX. and then repeated several more times. The course was based on careful work on printed and archival sources. A. E. Presnyakov specially traveled to Krakow to work in the archive. Particular attention in the course is given to the Russian lands within the Lithuanian-Russian state and their historical destinies. The multi-tribal composition of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the disunity of the lands that were part of it, which prevented the formation of a centralized state, are emphasized.
