As a result of the rebellion of Hetman I. Bryukhovetsky in February 1668, most of the Russian garrisons in the cities of the Left-Bank Ukraine were exterminated by the Cossacks. There was an immediate threat that the Hetmanate would come under the rule of the Crimean Khan and the Turkish Sultan. Calling on the help of the Crimean cavalry, I. Bryukhovetsky, and then his successor P. Doroshenko, conducted military operations against the Russian troops, intending to seize from Russia the lands that became part of it under the Andrusovo peace treaty of 1667. During the outbreak of war, the main enemy of the Russian state became the Crimean Khanate, seeking to use the favorable political situation for its expansion and the establishment of real military-administrative control over Ukraine. The convincing victory of the Russian armed forces in this “war without a name” made it possible to prevent the transformation of the Ukrainian hetmans into obedient vassals of the Crimean Khan and to return the lost territories. New book by I.B. Babulina is the most detailed and thorough study of the poorly studied military conflict of 1668–1669. based on a wide range of archival sources, most of which are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time.
