The book introduces readers to Vienna's Belvedere Gallery. Its history began with a collection of paintings by Empress Maria Theresa. In the late 1770s, Maria Theresa's son Emperor Joseph II decided to move most of the imperial collection from the Hofburg to the Upper Belvedere and ordered a catalog of the artistic works in the palace to be compiled. The Belvedere became one of the first imperial museums in Europe open to the public.
Over the course of several centuries, the museum's funds were constantly replenished, and it turned into a unique treasury of Western European painting. Along with paintings by outstanding masters of the XNUMXth–XNUMXth centuries, such as Michael Pacher, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Martin van Meytens, Franz Anton Maulberch, Angelika Kaufmann and others, works by famous artists of the second half of the XNUMXth and early XNUMXth centuries are presented here. A special place in the Belvedere space is given to the work of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and other artists of the Vienna Secession - representatives of the independent Austrian school of painting, which, having experienced several ups and downs over the course of a century, reached its apogee at the turn of the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. Today, the Austrian Belvedere Gallery has an extensive collection and an impressive complex of buildings designed to represent it. The large-scale, diverse collection of the museum also determined the structure of this book, which is divided into two main sections. The first part of the album includes works of Western European painting of the XNUMXth–XNUMXth centuries, and the second, much larger section is dedicated to artists of the XNUMXth–XNUMXth centuries.
