Maciej Gurny's book is dedicated to the phenomenon known as the "war of the spirit". It was carried out simultaneously in many scientific fields. Geography became the vehicle of political ideas; ace anthropology served as a tool for defining "own" and "foreign" peoples. Finally, psychiatrists and psychologists studied the medical theories of the collective psychosis of the enemy peoples and attempted to psychoanalyze the political leaders of the enemy countries. The book tells about the mobilization of intellectuals in Central and Eastern Europe, traces the amazing and unconventional cultural interactions. Instead of following the development of racial anthropology and other sciences up to their nationalistic and eugenic manifestations in the 1930s and 1940s, the author looks back to the XNUMXth century, tracing their origins. The history of the nationalist mobilization of the humanities, in the author's opinion, rejects the idea of a distinct transition from "humanistic" to "totalitarian" science. And in a sense, the "war of the spirit" has never subsided.
