The works included in the collection reflect the amazing fate of Viktor Platonovich Nekrasov (1911–1987), a writer, architect, military sapper, and emigrant. The story "In the trenches of Stalingrad" was published almost immediately after the war, in 1946, quickly gained recognition and became one of the first examples of "lieutenant's prose" - literature, honestly, without pathos and false pathos, tells about a person in inhuman war conditions. The book "In the Hometown" (1954) is about how difficult it is to truly return from the war, to rediscover yourself. Written already in exile, “A Little Sad Tale” (1985) is about the loss of illusions, about the fragility of friendly alliances and life principles, about the temptations of fame. The skill of Nekrasov as a prose writer is fully manifested in his psychologically accurate and masterfully written stories.
