The collection dedicated to the death of the Far Eastern city of Nikolaevsk-on-Amur in 1920 included a documentary study by the journalist A.Ya. Gutman (1889–1950), memoirs of M.V. Sotnikova and K.A. Emelyanov, testimonies from the regional press, as well as correspondence preserved in the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History (RGASPI), protocols of interrogations of participants in the events, etc. The published materials acquaint the reader with the unprecedented history of the destruction of a prosperous and populous city in the lower reaches of the Amur by the Red partisans. The impact of the tragedy on the subsequent fate of the Far East is underestimated, the memory of this episode of the "Red Terror" is practically absent in the historical consciousness of society. Book A.Ya. Gutman, containing not only a detailed chronicle of the "Nikolaev massacre", but also valuable testimonies of survivors, has not been republished since 1924. Its publication in modern Russia is an important contribution to the restoration of the memory of a forgotten tragedy. The book is intended for specialist historians, students and graduate students, as well as for all those interested in the past of Russia, the history of the revolution and the Civil War.
