The story of Alexander Neverov (1886-1923) "Tashkent - a city of bread" was published only once during the life of the writer. The publishing house "Land and Factory", following the author, addressed it to an adult reader, which is natural, given the tragedy of the events described - the famine of 1921-1922 in the Volga region - and the authenticity and sincerity of this description. Neverov was not just a witness to the famine, not only survived it, but also made the same path to the saving "bread city of Tashkent", which in the story will fall to the lot of the hero - the twelve-year-old peasant Mishka Dodonov - and his companions. However, later this story began to be published in various "School Libraries" - a series of books for middle and high school students. We follow this tradition without discussing its legitimacy (the book is undoubtedly one of the brightest in Russian literature of the 1920s, and this is the most important thing), but by providing the story - to facilitate understanding by the modern teenage reader - with a large reference apparatus. and commentary articles.
