“The B-1 is a supersonic strategic bomber with a variable geometry wing, created as a replacement for the B-52 and became the world's first combat aircraft in the design of which elements of the Stealth technology were widely used.” Under Reagan, 100 of these machines were built, which came into the possession of the US Air Force Strategic Command as carriers of nuclear weapons. In the final version, the B-1B, the concept of an air defense breakthrough at ultra-low altitudes with enveloping the terrain was implemented. Although in 1990 the bomber received the official name "Ulan" ("Lancer"), the pilots had already given it a less solemn name - ""Bone"" (""Bone"). After the end of the Cold War, aircraft of this type were converted into carriers of tactical weapons, but only in 1998, the “lancers” that remained out of their lot were first involved in a combat operation, inflicting bombing attacks on Iraqi targets. However, then they fought continuously: Yugoslavia, Afghanistan (where the Lancers actually played the role of front-line bombers, having chalked up 40% of the dropped precision-guided bombs), Iraq, where on the very first day of the B-1B invasion, 240 objects were hit by bombs, in 2011 - Libya, in 2012 - return to Afghanistan, and from 2014 to 2016 "" work "" on targets in Syria.
In the new book by a well-known aviation historian, a detailed history of the creation of the B-1 and data on its design, production, flight characteristics, armament and combat use are supplemented with many photographs and unique drawings.
