“The most truthful poetry is fiction,” said the English poet and playwright William Shakespeare (1564–1616). The "fictitious truth" of his creations turned out to be the core, the center around which a huge Shakespearean universe was formed. In the sonnets, William Shakespeare speaks mainly about love, which "does not know loss and decay" and has many guises. In the erotic poem "Venus and Adonis" (1593; Shakespeare called her "the firstborn of my imagination"), the obsession with passion in the most earthly sense of the word is revealed: the goddess of love unsuccessfully seeks reciprocity from a mortal youth of dazzling beauty. The poem "Dishonored Lucretia" (1594) was based on the tragic story of a beautiful and virtuous Roman matron. The poetic experiments of the young Shakespeare and the sonnets, with their wise brevity, will allow the modern reader to get a better idea of the work of the great English master.
