The book is a reconstruction of the prehistory of the creation of the Georgian Democratic Republic, the history of its existence and Sovietization in 1921. The author examines the process of the exit of the territories of Transcaucasia from the collapsing Russian Empire and their movement to acquire international legal subjectivity, traces how they emerged from the most difficult world war and gradually left the Russian orbit, and how the Georgian elite changed the vector of its political activity from demanding an autonomous status within Russia to a course towards full independence. The book also shows the development of the international policy of the Georgian Republic. Reconstruction of the events and processes that took place in Transcaucasia in the first years after the revolution in Russia is also significant for understanding the prehistory of contemporary interethnic conflicts in Transcaucasia.
