Beginning of the XNUMXth century. A Dutch ship is wrecked off the coast of Japan. The surviving crew members are taken prisoner and accused of piracy. Among those captured was the Englishman John Blackthorn, who knew geography, military affairs and mathematics very well and had a strong character. Their fate must be decided by the local ruler, whose arrival the whole village is waiting for. Rumors of a talented captain reach Prince Toranaga no Minowara, one of the most powerful men in Japan. Toranaga takes Blackthorne under his protection, hatching a devious plan to use his knowledge in a power struggle. In order to survive in a foreign country, an Englishman learns its language and customs, becomes a samurai, but the thought does not leave him that someday he will still be able to return to his homeland.
