The immortal comedy by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol (1809–1852) The Inspector General, the brightest example of Russian satire, was written in 1836. Ten years later, the author himself wrote that in it he decided to “collect into one heap everything that was bad in Russia, which I then knew, all the injustices that are done in those places and in those cases where justice is most required of a person, and for laugh at everything at once." The nameless county town in which the action takes place has become a model for all of Russia, and all types of Russian reality, all the characters of the Russian national spirit, all the spiritual movements and all the vices inherent in a person who sees himself in others as if in a crooked mirror appeared on the stage. The play makes the viewer laugh and sad at the same time. This edition is decorated with drawings by Vladimir Amosovich Taburin (1864–1919) and Pyotr Mikhailovich Boklevsky (1816–1897); the latter portrayed Gogol's heroes so expressively that subsequently many actors specially made up "under Boklevsky" before going on stage. The book also includes versions of various scenes, the play Theatrical Departure after the Presentation of a New Comedy, an article and notes on The Inspector General by Vasily Vasilyevich Gippius (1890–1942) and other additional materials.
