Esper Esperovich Ukhtomsky - a statesman of the Russian Empire, a prince from the Rurik family.
In 1890-1891, Prince Ukhtomsky accompanied the Tsarevich, the future Nicholas II, on his journey to the East on the cruiser "Memory of Azov". After returning from a trip, E. E. Ukhtomsky was elected a member of the Russian Geographical Society. The success of the book written as a result of this trip was facilitated by a text containing information on the history, ethnography and religion of the peoples of the East, as well as illustrations by N. N. Karazin. Immediately after its publication, The Journey was published in English, German and French. The collection of Buddhist antiquities collected by E. E. Ukhtomsky was considered until 1917 the most complete collection of objects of Buddhism in Eastern Siberia. In 1900, this collection was exhibited at the World Exhibition in Paris, where it received a gold medal. After being requisitioned by the Soviet government, it formed an important part of the eastern collection of the Hermitage and other museums in St. Petersburg.
