At the end of the Great War in the Baltics, the interests of the great powers, the collapsed empires and the new nation-states of Eastern Europe clashed. The Baltic states found themselves between two revolutions—the great Russian (1917–1921) and the no less fateful German (1918–1919). Recent enemies, the officers of the armies of the two defeated empires, united to fight Bolshevism in a desperate attempt to change the irreparable. Of particular interest is the participation of the German military in these events. The course of events quickly demonstrated how far their true goals were from declarations, and how far their opponents were from the ideological supporters of the world revolution. They sought to save Germany from the humiliation of Versailles, but turned into landsknechts and outcasts in their own country. Their victories and defeats determined not only the map of Eastern Europe, but also the alignment of forces in the next total war. To understand their motives and take the point of view of those who stopped the Red invasion in 1919, a collection of memoirs published for the first time outside of Germany will help.
