The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club is Dickens' first novel, which immediately brought him popularity. The young writer wrote this touching essay in 1836, when he was only twenty-four years old. Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and other serious works of classical realism will appear later, and in Notes the young Dickens unleashes his sparkling humor, describing a whole string of hilarious "good old England" characters. The protagonist of the novel, the good-natured and naive optimist Pickwick, asserts by his very existence the triumph of all that is good, healthy, and just over all that is base, evil, and perverted. It is no coincidence that this novel by the young Dickens caused a wave of reader interest. The text of the novel is given in an excellent translation by Maria Andreevna Shishmareva. The uniqueness of this edition is given by the magnificent and rarest illustrations by the French artist Jacques Touchet.
